Conclusions
Terrestrial ring current responds to both solar wind Pdyn and IMF.
Largest ring currents become O+ dominated, include terrestrial H+.
O+ supply enhanced in initial phase of storm development, by dPd.
Hypothesis: formation of substantial ring currents depends on internal plasma source.
Tests:
- New correlative studies of storm behavior vs. interplanetary conditions.
- New global models turn on/off internal sources, study ring current response.
- Hermean magnetosphere appears to be capable of ring current formation, has little if any internal plasma source.
